Edak’s Story
Our work is driven by seeing the incredible changes that your support helps us bring about in the lives of the children that we work with.
One of the many success stories that we have recorded is that of Edak (name is changed) who was rescued by back in 2018 after her father had accused her of witchcraft, tortured her and kept her locked inside a chicken house for weeks.
When the team rescued her Edak was seriously malnourished and unkempt. She was taken to the local police station and her father was soon arrested. In our emergency shelter, Edak was then given the medical, feeding and counselling support that she needed to get back on her feet. Whilst here she also completed her secondary education.
In June 2022 the team eventually found a foster carer to look after Edak, which she was very happy about. She had finally found herself a home where she felt welcomed. Edak's foster family were also very happy with the progress the child was making while staying with them and this led to their indicating interest to adopt the child as their own. The BRCI legal team then facilitated the process for the adoption, filed it in court and the process is now on the verge of conclusion.
Edak recently got admission into the University of Calabar, Calabar where she is studying Social Work. This child, who almost lost her life because of a false claim by her own father and was subjected to all kinds of inhumane treatment as a way of punishment, is now flourishing and succeeding in life. Her story gives hope to children who are going through similar problems Edak went through.
