Bebor Model Schools
Pollution by the oil industry has led to wide-spread environmental destruction of the land, air and soil in the Niger Delta.
Safe Child Africa’s work was initially inspired by the work of the human and environmental rights activist – Ken Saro-Wiwa.
His work to hold Shell accountable for it’s devastating actions in the Niger Delta and his subsequent murder by the military junta and Shell, led to our founder, Gary Foxcroft, spending 3 months in Nigeria researching the impact of the oil industry in 2003.
In 2006, we were fortunate to start working with Bebor International Model Schools, back when we first met the head of their International Friends group, Prof. Scott Pegg and Director of the Bebor School, Rev. Moses Lezor.
The schools are located in the Ogoniland region of the Niger Delta, which has been decimated by the activities of the oil industry and where life for the average person is particularly tough.
Since then, we have supported the schools in a variety of ways, including:
building libraries and boreholes
training teachers
setting up computer labs
providing scholarships for disabled and disadvantaged children.
Borehole constructed by Safe Child Africa (formerly Stepping Stones Nigeria)
